Pakistan’s ace badminton player “Mahoor Shahzad” has won a spot in the Tokyo Olympics because of her excellent performance in the circuit. According to the Pakistan Badminton Federation, Mahoor Shahzad is the first badminton player from Pakistan to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics and to burst into the top 140 in world rankings.

What is Mahoor Shahzad’s background?

Mahoor Shahzad (born October 17, 1996) is a badminton player from Pakistan. At the 2017 Pakistan International tournament, Shahzad won the women’s singles title. She has competed successfully in the several International Events such as:
🔹Asian Games in 2014
🔹Commonwealth Games in 2018
🔹Summer Olympics in 2020

She, 23-year-old from Karachi, currently ranked world number 138 in the singles rankings.

In a joint statement, PBF’s Nisar Ahmed Shahwani and PBF Secretary-General Wajid Ali Chaudhry stated, “It is truly a consequence of her relentless efforts and hard work that she has been picked to participate in the famous event.”

Mahoor won a silver medal in Kenya International badminton Series 2020 along with another player, which improves her international ranking from 149 to 138. She earned a place in the Tokyo Olympics on her recent performance and her international ranking.

On the achievement, Mahoor tweeted on her account:
“A dream has certainly come to true. Alhumdulillah, I have been elected for Tokyo Olympics 2020. This is a glorious achievement for Pakistan as I am the first Pakistani Badminton player to qualify for the Olympics. I am grateful to all of you for your prayers and assistance.”

She said that If she had the opportunity to participate in international events during the last year, she would have been on the list of the world’s top 100 badminton players. She was not able to do this, however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As per The News report, Khalid Mehmood, the Secretary of the Pakistan Olympic Association said, “This is roaring news for the country’s womenfolk as one of our athletes has earned a spot on the Olympics wholly on her international ranking. We have just been informed by the international body of Mahoor’s achievement. This is big news for Pakistan sports”.
