Maheen Sohail is the name on everyone’s lips at the moment. With her simple yet ingenious desire to add color to Pakistan’s rich history. All of us have noticed a definite lack when it comes to the State of Pakistan’s efforts to protect and promote our heritage. Maheen Sohail has proven that at times like this, ordinary citizens have to step up and take initiative. That’s where Rangeen Pakistan comes in.
Maheen Sohail works as a Product Designer at Facebook. She was a member of the social media program that served to make Facebook’s very first social VR adventures, namely, Facebook Spaces and Facebook Horizon.
AI has been a game-changer in the course of art and technology. From speech-recognition to planning and problem-solving.However, when it comes to color recognition, Artificial intelligence is not always on point. As Sohail said on Rangeen Pakistan’s Instagram, she recognizes that there are tools out there which color these photos with the help of AI, but these tools are trained on images that can not predict basic things like the fact that Pakistan’s flag needs to be green because they have been trained on a rather generic set of images. Which is why she started Rangeen Pakistan. By not only putting in extra effort to improve the colors manually and do right by Pakistan’s glorious history. But also to see if she can train AI models on a new set of images, thereby filling a huge gap in the current AI coloring tools.
Maheen Sohail has always been a storyteller. Before starting Rangeen Pakistan, she also worked as a designer for immersive media formats such as 180 and 360 VR. In her free time, she enjoys making top of the line, professional documentaries regarding design and amazing traveler guides. On Rangeen Pakistan’s Instagram account she mentions that she is using this opportunity to not only improve her learning about different AI models but also to get to know Pakistan’s rich history in a deeper manner.
